Additional Inscriptions
Add a name, dates or words to an existing memorial while respecting its lettering, layout, stone and history.
Lettering that belongs
Adding an inscription to an existing headstone
An additional inscription may be needed after a further burial or when a family chooses to add a name, date or short dedication to an existing memorial. The aim is to make the new lettering feel considered alongside the original rather than simply filling the remaining space.
Matching a headstone inscription involves more than choosing a similar font. Letter height, spacing, line length, capitalisation, carving method, colour and the age of the existing work all affect the result. The memorial material and condition also determine whether lettering can be completed in place or whether the stone may need to be removed for workshop attention.
Before preparing a quotation, we need the cemetery or churchyard, grave details, exact proposed wording and clear photographs of the whole memorial and existing letters. The available inscription area is checked before a layout is agreed.
Details considered when matching memorial lettering
Style and spacing
The shape of the letters, size, line spacing, alignment and relationship to borders or artwork are studied so the addition sits naturally.
Cut and finish
Existing work may be cut, sandblasted, raised, painted, gilded or left natural. The stone and condition guide which treatment can be matched appropriately.
Wording and capacity
Names, dates and verses are laid out within the genuinely usable area. If space is limited, wording or another practical option may need discussion.
A clear approval path
How an additional inscription is arranged
- 01
Send the details
Provide the memorial location, grave reference, photographs and the wording exactly as you would like it considered.
- 02
Check the memorial
Existing lettering, available space, material, condition and any cleaning or renovation needs are assessed.
- 03
Review the layout
Names, dates, line breaks, letter style and finish are set out for careful checking before approval.
- 04
Permission and lettering
Any required burial-ground application is completed before the approved inscription and related work proceed.
A coherent finished memorial
Renewing older lettering at the same time
Fresh lettering can appear noticeably brighter than an older inscription. Where appropriate, families may consider cleaning the memorial or renewing faded paint or gilding so the existing and additional inscriptions sit more comfortably together. This is optional work that depends on the condition of the letters and stone.
If there is not enough sound stone for the proposed wording, alternatives may include shorter text, adjusted line breaks, a smaller but still legible letter size, use of another suitable face or discussion of a separate tablet. The right answer depends on the individual memorial and burial-ground rules.
Additional inscription questions
Before adding a name to a headstone
Take your time. We’re here to help you find the right way forward.
Can new lettering match the original exactly?
The aim is a close and sympathetic match, but hand-cut letters, weathering and older materials have natural variation. Photographs and inspection help establish the most appropriate style and finish.
Does the headstone have to be removed?
Some inscriptions may be completed in the burial ground, while others require workshop access because of the material, method, condition or cemetery rules. This is assessed before work is agreed.
Is cemetery permission needed?
Additional inscriptions commonly require an application or written approval from the cemetery or churchyard authority. Requirements and fees vary by burial ground.
Should I include punctuation in the wording?
Write the wording exactly as you want it considered, including dates, punctuation and capitalisation. The final proof is the opportunity to check every character and line break carefully.
